GUM Clinics

Local Genito-Urinary Medicine clinics

Sexually transmitted diseases are common. If you think that you may have a sexually transmitted disease (STD), you should seek advice either from one of the doctors in the practice or from one of the two local Genito-Urinary Medicine Clinics, The Lydia Clinic at St. Thomas' Hospital and the Lloyd Clinic at Guy's Hospital. Both these clinics offer free and fully confidential treatment and advice. The information below is based on information leaflets published by the two clinics.

Please check with the clinics to confirm opening times, as these can change because of staff shortages or funding problems. The clinics have an excellent website - make use of it!

The Lydia Clinic

The Lydia Clinic is based in St Thomas' Hospital's Department of Genito-urinary Medicine (1st Floor, Lambeth Wing, St. Thomas' Hospital, London SE1 7EH). The Lydia Clinic offers a walk-in service. This means you do not need to have an appointment to come and see us. You may have decided to attend the department yourself or your GP or another doctor may have referred you. If you want to be seen on the same day that you come to the clinic, you must arrive before 5.30 p.m. We regret that we can not see new walk-in patients who arrive after that time.

Telephone 020-7928-9292 (women - extn 2329, men - extn 2129).

What will happen when I come to the Lydia Department?

If this is the first time that you have come to Lydia, the receptionist will ask you to fill out a card listing your name, address and date of birth. This information is kept confidential and will not be used outside of the Lydia Department without your information. If you do not want us to contact you at your home address, please tell the receptionist. We strongly recommend that you give an address to telephone number, as it is sometimes necessary for us to contact you about your treatment.

We will ask for your GP's name and address. If you do not want us to contact your GP please let the reception staff know. The receptionist will make a set of notes for you and will enter your details on a confidential computer system. You will be given a Lydia Clinic number. Please keep a note of this and bring it with you each time you attend the clinic. You will be asked to take a seat in the waiting room, and your notes will be sent through to the doctors and staff in the clinic. The doctor will call you in to the clinic and will see you in the order in which you arrived in clinic.

Please note that patients returning for treatment or results will have been given an appointment and may be seen before you.

Seeing the doctor and other staff

The doctor will call your name and they will discuss any problems or concerns you have and take details of your sexual history. It tests are necessary you will be asked to wait in the waiting room until the tests are carried out by a nurse or a doctor. You may also be asked to see a health adviser. Health advisers can give you information about sexual health or can offer support and advice on dealing with any worries or problems that you may have. After the tests you will be seen by the doctor once more to discuss your results and any treatment you may need. You may also be asked to return at a later date for further results.

Follow up appointments

Generally, results will be ready in 7-10 working days. If you are not given an appointment or do not return for the results, we will contact you if we need to see you again. If you change your address please let reception know your new address.
Our aim is to see you within 30 minutes of your appointment time. However, if you are more than 20 minutes late for your appointment, we cannot guarantee when we will see you.
